Travel Therapy in Alaska

Alaska is one of the most unique travel therapy markets in the country. The combination of remote facilities, premium pay, and once-in-a-lifetime location appeal makes Alaska assignments highly sought-after — but inventory at any given moment is small. Our active Alaska inventory is typically 1–3 assignments, often in remote bush communities or Anchorage metro.

Current pay landscape

Alaska travel therapy pay varies significantly by location. Remote bush communities (Bethel, Nome, Barrow) often offer premium rates due to small candidate pools and harder logistics — sometimes reaching $2,400+ weekly for PT, with OT and SLP in similar premium territory. Anchorage and Fairbanks run closer to national average rates. Plan for the specific contract; quoted rates vary widely.

License compact status

Alaska is an active PT Compact member, actively issuing and accepting compact privileges. Alaska has enacted ASLP-IC legislation but is not yet issuing privileges. OT Compact is not enacted in Alaska. OTs and SLPs need full state licensure through the Alaska Department of Commerce.

Top markets right now

When we have active Alaska inventory, openings appear in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and remote communities accessible only by plane (Bethel, Nome, Kotzebue). Setting mix is heavily skilled nursing and tribal/regional health center work. Remote contracts often include housing and travel reimbursement built in.

Tax and stipend considerations

Alaska has no state income tax, making take-home economics very favorable. Cost of living in Anchorage is moderate; remote bush communities have extremely high grocery and fuel costs but typically include employer-provided housing. The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend program does not apply to non-residents.

What makes Alaska distinctive

Alaska is genuinely unlike any other US travel therapy market. The remote contracts offer experiences (bush flights, tribal health center work, summer 24-hour daylight) that are unavailable elsewhere. The pay premium for remote work can be substantial. PT Compact membership accelerates the licensing path for PTs and PTAs. For therapists drawn to wilderness lifestyle and willing to flex on contract availability, Alaska delivers an experience hard to replicate.
